| In 1901, the president of the New York Stock Exchange and his son went looking for a ranch. With their financial wherewithal, they had their pick of the best lands in the West. Their choice: 12,000 acres right outside of Yellowstone Park, nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Beartooth mountains. They named this little bit of heaven, the Lazy E-L. |

| For over 100 years, the Lazy E-L has been an authentic working cattle ranch that’s served as an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life for corporate executives, politicians, prominent families and folks who love the West. And that ain’t just talk. |

At the Lazy E-L Ranch, you can enjoy the thrill of a horseback riding vacation that includes 2300-head cattle drives, not to mention fly fishing, hunting for elk, deer and so much more!
The Lazy E-L Ranch is a 12,000 acre working cattle ranch south-west of Billings, Montana, in the shadows of the Beartooth Mountains and just a stone’s throw from Yellowstone Park.
The Lazy E-L Ranch is a family owned Montana working dude ranch with alot of history. Homesteaded in 1901 by Malcolm S. Mackay, this guest ranch and livestock operation is now managed by fourth generation family members. |
| |
|
As guests of the Mackay family, visitors will appreciate Montana's big skies, and an unforgettable vacation in the intimate privacy of the Lazy E-L. Our guests help us with finding strays, sorting off bulls, and working a real cattle drive. Helping gather and move 2300 yearlings from one pasture to the next on a cattle drive is one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences we share with our guests. For your comfort and privacy, we book small groups and treat them as family. Unlike traditional dude ranches, this cattle ranch does not cater to large groups of twenty-five-person plus nose-to-tail trail horse rides.

Horseback Riding for all Ages.
If horseback riding, being part of a cattle drive and enjoying the magnificent scenery of the Montana countryside is what you are dreaming of, then you will not be disappointed.
When our guest arrive at the Lazy E-L Ranch, they are assigned a horse, taught how to tack and groom and are expected to turn in "your horse" at the end of the day.
|
|
Experienced horseback riders will feel at home in the saddle on the E-L and will find that horseback riding while tracking a cow is an experience of a lifetime. If you are new to it or just a little rusty in the saddle, our crew can help you master basic horseback riding skills in the corrals before tackling the trails and the pace of a cattle drive.
Your kids will have so much fun becoming accomplished cowboys and cowgirls under the care of our guest wranglers. |
| |
If you enjoy fly fishing, at the Lazy E-L Ranch there is trout fishing on the five miles of private access to the West Rosebud River through the Lazy E-L Ranch. With just four rods allowed on the stream at any one time, this private wild stretch of the river is fished only by family and guests ensuring that you will often be the first person to hook that rainbow or brown trout.
Elk and deer hunting at the E-L is familiar territory to a herd of over 200 elk and endless mule and whitetail deer. |
|
The Montana Wildlife is nature at its best. We have a variety of wildlife at or near the Lazy E-L Ranch; chances are you are likely to see black bear, moose, mountain lions, wolves, coyotes, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and turkeys.
Other Activities at the Lazy E-L:
Lazy E-L Surrounding Area: Yellowstone National Park, Beartooth Pass, Red Lodge, the Cody Rodeo in Cody, Wyoming, Buffalo Bill Historcal Center and the thrill of White Water Rafting.
Many of us have traveled to various parts of the world, but we all agree that the most beautiful place is in our backyard just three miles outside of Roscoe, MT.
